The Seneca Crane Beard Gift Guide

Updated on October 24, 2012

What's the Seneca Crane Beard?

Played by Wes Bentley in the movies, Seneca Crane is best known as the Head Gamemaker of the 74th Hunger Games and also widely known for his unique beard. According to reliable sources, creating the Seneca Crane beard required three hours in the dressing room every day. It has certainly been the subject of memes and recreated in a wide variety of products ranging from the Sims 3 game to necklaces and costumes. Want some extra fun? Use Photoshop to add the beard to a variety of pictures and see how long it takes people to notice.

Trivia About The Seneca Crane Beard

  • It got Wes Bentley some strange looks. You might be shooting a movie in a futuristic setting, but you still have to live in 21st century Earth. Wes Bentley revealed that his beard did receive some strange looks when he was out picking up baby formula and other supplies at Target and elsewhere. Even with those odd looks, he says he would have probably kept the beard if it wouldn't have taken a couple of hours every morning to maintain it.
  • Suzanne Collins liked the look. "I was happy about that," said Bentley, telling People Magazine in an interview that Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins was a fan of the beard from the first time she saw it. She apparently thought it fit in well with the futuristic avante-garde style of the Capitol.
  • Makeup designer Ve Neill designed the beard. Makeup credits for Ve Neill include Beetlejuice, Mrs. Doubtfire and Ed Wood, for which she won Academy Awards. She was thrilled that Bentley thought to grow a beard before filming so she could sculpt it into the recognizable Seneca Crane beard.
  • The beard rapidly became a meme. You can find Photoshopped pictures of the Seneca Crane beard plastered on anything from Budweiser bottles to politicians that the image creator apparently don't like.
  • You can find the Seneca Crane beard on stuff like T-shirts and mugs. Are you a fan of Seneca Crane's beard? If so, you might find a Facebook fanpage if you look around. You can also find Seneca Crane's beard on some cool products, and also apply it to your own face as part of a "Hunger Games" themed costume.
